Our Plantation
Enviro
Systems' major plantation is established on Warolim and surrounding properties
in the Parish of Kadnook County of Lowan. This section of around 980 hectares
is situated in Kadnook Victoria approximately 10 kilometres southwest
of Edenhope.
Of this, 100 hectares were planted in 1998
with a further 350 hectares planted in the 1999 season, 200 hectares in
2000 and 200 hectares in 2001.
Enviro Systems developed its Warolim Plantation
at Edenhope from scratch. It is a plantation purpose-grown for firewood,
and was commenced sufficiently early to give Enviro Systems a lead on
the rest of the market.
Blue Gum Forestry Management, headed by William
Turner RDA, is responsible for the management of our Warolim plantation
and offer their vast silvicultural experience to the project. Australian
forest management for timber production is well regarded internationally.
Many international forest experts consider Australia a leader in sustainable
forest management practices.
The combination of climate, soil and topography
for the Green Triangle region indicates that it is well suited to forestry,
in particular the growing Eucalyptus globulus (Tasmanian Blue Gum). Blue
Gum is already being successfully grown on our plantation. The plantation
thus allows Enviro Systems to guarantee the supply of firewood to franchisees.
The species was selected for its fast-growing ability and its high yield.
Tasmanian Bluegum is an open-textured hardwood and considered a quality
timber for fuel purposes. The tree also coppices well. After the first
harvest, the tree re-sprouts from the stump. This is called the 'coppice'.
Because we remove all but the strongest shoots - the plantation regenerates.
Careful planning of all aspects of the operation has taken place to create
a solid plantation framework for the project. Expert ground preparation,
seedling selection and planting processes have taken place to ensure the
root growth has been well established and good growth rates are achieved.

During the early life of the plantation, weeds were controlled to ensure
the trees received enough water, nutrients and light. This was undertaken
with the application of environmentally friendly products in conjunction
with a natural pest management program.
Great care is taken to protect the water,
soil and wildlife in the region as well as ensuring appropriate principals
of forestry management and a commitment to sustainability are upheld.
Immediately following harvest, the felled trees are stripped of excess
limbs and cut into firewood logs of 30cm lengths using a mechanical docker
ready for drying.
At the drying site the tree trunks are stacked to allow air flow between
them facilitating field drying which will take place at Warolim until
moisture content reaches approximately 12 to 17%.
After seasoning, the
firewood logs are packed into bags bearing the Enviro Systems trademark
logo. Each bag will contain 18 kilograms of firewood and detail
the contents including Plantation Grown Firewood species, harvest date and weight.
Growing, harvesting, processing and transporting timber requires highly
skilled people. Enviro Systems carefully manages this process. In addition
to plantation jobs, the harvesting process provides considerable employment
in the region.
