EFFICIENT OPERATING HINTS
The key to clean and efficient wood heating is knowing how to operate
your solid fuel heater correctly. Incorrect use causes insufficient heat,
pollution and a build-up of creosote. Follow these simple tips to get
the most out of your solid fuel heater:
Make sure your home is energy efficient. Insulate the ceiling and
walls to make your home energy efficient. Prevent heat leaks through cracks
in doors and windows and reduce heat loss through windows by drawing curtains
at night.
Decide
what you expect from your heater. If you want
it to heat your whole house, your heater should be located as centrally
as possible. The living room is ideal but it will depend on your floor
plan. Seek professional advise about installation and location.
Always buy the right size heater. A heater that is too large for
an area will have to be turned down too often, resulting in reduced efficiency
and smoke pollution.
For best results, always use the type of fuel recommended by the manufacturer.
If a heater meets the national emission standard, it will have a compliance
plate that specifies the correct fuel to use.
Never overload your heater. It does not allow for proper combustion
and is also a waste of fuel.
Don't let your
fire smoulder. A fire set on a low air setting causes excessive smoke
pollution and wastes energy.
Unseasoned wood, combined with a flue which has not heated up, or has
cooled down over night, gives off a substance known as creosote. It can
be avoided by always burning dry wood at high temperatures.
TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL BURNING
To get your fire started, use kindling wood, paper and firelighters. Large
pieces of wood can then be added after a bed of coals has been established.
Ensure your wood is dry and well seasoned so it burns cleanly and efficiently.
Efficient burning only occurs when adequate air is supplied to the fuel.
When you start and refuel your fire always leave air controls open.
Keep your fire going at a steady rate. To obtain complete burning you
need high temperature and enough air flow so coals and flames glow brightly.
Help reduce air pollution and save money on energy costs by using more
efficient heating techniques.
